These islands were used to warn the inhabitants of Vigo against the arrival of pirates and looters. At the time the lighthouses didn’t exist, so bonfires were lighted. A big quantity of wood was needed and this is the reason why the Cíes Islands are covered by tall trees of Eucalyptus, a kind of plant that grows very fast.

Beautiful.
This grand show is eternal. It is always sunrise somewhere; the dew is never all dried at once; a shower is forever falling; vapor is ever rising. Eternal sunrise, eternal sunset, eternal dawn and gloaming, on sea and continents and islands, each in its turn, as the round earth rolls.
